Armauer Hansen

Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen (1841-1912) identified the causal bacteria of leprosy (M. leprae) in 1873.

Charlotte Pimm

Charlotte Pimm took the lead in raising support for the Baileys, with her two sisters in Dublin.

Rev Henry Uffmann

Rev Henry Uffmann, founded the Leprosy Mission's Purulia Hospital in 1888.

Mother Marianne

Mother Marianne Cope worked at both the Kapiolani Home for Girls and the Bishop Home for Girls at Kalaupapa in Hawaii.

 


   

Stanley Stein

Stanley Stein, author of Alone No Longer: The Story of a Man Who Refused to be One of the Living Dead (Carville:The Star, 1963) crusaded for the rights of people affected by leprosy.

Betty Martin

Betty Martin was sent to Carville when she was 19 yrs old. She wrote of her experiences in Miracle at Carville (NY: Doubleday, 1950).

Francisco Nunes

Francisco Nunes (Bacurau) founded Morhan, Brazil's Movement for the Reintegration of Persons with Hansen's disease.

 
Bill Malo

William Malo was sent to Molokai when he was a young man. He works with IDEA speaking of his experiences.

Dr Gopal

Dr. Gopal was diagnosed with Hansen's Disease while studying in college, but continued post-graduation studies upon being cured. He is the President of IDEA in India.
